VRWS Leadership Interview of the Day
In approaching the 11th edition of the Vacation Rental World Summit, we’re releasing a series of interviews to leaders, key players and highly motivated people in our industry whose companies make a deep impact in our space and will be present at VRWS.
The aim is to get you some insight into these leaders and the company they founded, manage or work for, as well as getting some behind the scenes on their thinking, their motivation and their drive.

DAVID CICCARELLI
- What do you do for a living and which part of your job do you enjoy the most?
I am the CEO of Lake.com, a vacation rental platform for accommodations on or near the water. What I enjoy most about my work is building our product and providing our customers with resources and opportunities to learn about, appreciate, and experience the great outdoors.
- How does your company innovate or adapt to the evolving needs of the vacation rental space?
Lake.com focuses on lakefront properties and vacation rentals within a 15-minute drive of a lake. To meet the demand for freshwater adventures, we created travel guides for the top 100 lakes in North America as well as extensive guides covering national parks in the United States and Canada to assist families in finding ideal vacation destinations. As they say in our neck of the woods, ‘you can’t make more Muskoka.’ Given the scarcity of rentable lakefront property and the high demand for vacationing on the lake, we partner with homeowners and property managers to provide guests with exceptional opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have to create memorable stays and vacations for their families on the water.
- How do you view the various predictions about AI’s impact on society, ranging from dystopian scenarios to transformative advancements, and how does your company approach or integrate AI technology?
AI, like any other tool, can be used for good or evil. That said, there is a tremendous amount of good that AI has done and continues to do. Lake has embraced AI by researching dozens of geographic markets to better understand the area, events, and why those areas are hot tourist spots. We also leverage AI in several of our tools to better understand trends in the industry.
Our friends at Hostaway recently published a report called “AI Adoption in the Short-Term Rental Industry.” The survey highlights the impact that AI is having on the short-term rental industry.
The survey, which involved 500 short-term rental property owners and managers, revealed that 62% believe AI provides a competitive edge in the marketplace. This shift towards AI is not just about adopting new technology but about optimizing critical operational tasks. For instance, 41% of respondents use AI for price optimization, making dynamic pricing more accessible and efficient. Additionally, 30% of the participants have adopted AI-driven chatbots, indicating a growing reliance on AI for customer service. It’s a great report that everyone should read.
- What would you like to achieve by attending the Vacation Rental World Summit 2024 in Porto with your company?
Our main goal for attending the Vacation Rental World Summit 2024 in Porto is to really strengthen our position in the vacation rental industry and broaden our market reach. We see it as a fantastic opportunity to connect with key industry players, explore the latest trends, and showcase what Lake.com has to offer.
What we’re looking to achieve is a mix of things. First, we’re eager to network and collaborate with other professionals, potential partners, and stakeholders in the industry. Building these connections can lead to some exciting partnerships and joint ventures that could benefit everyone involved.
We’re also keen on gaining insights into the latest market trends and consumer behaviors. Understanding what’s happening in the industry will help us refine our strategies and stay ahead of the curve. Plus, it’s a great chance to boost our brand visibility. By showcasing our unique offerings, we can position Lake.com as a leader in the vacation rental and real estate markets, which could help attract new clients and investors.
- What are your passions, including any hobbies or sports, that you enjoy discussing and sharing with others outside the professional setting?
I love taking family and friends out on our boat in Canadian cottage country on its three biggest lakes, including Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau, and Lake Joseph. Gardening is another passion of mine, and I have begun studying homesteading.
You’ll have the opportunity to meet the David directly at VRWS in Porto
