VRWS Leadership Interview of the Day

1. What do you do for a living and which part of your job do you enjoy the most? 

I’m the Chief Economist and SVP of Research at AirDNA, where I spearhead research initiatives and develop tools to provide comprehensive data and insights for the short-term rental industry. I also co-host AirDNA’s podcast, the STR Data Lab, and regularly contribute to international media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and Bloomberg, providing exclusive analysis and forecasts to global audiences. 

The part of my job I enjoy the most? Data! As an economist and data analyst, it’s like Christmas every day, with real-time access to the treasure trove of industry data AirDNA has to explore.

2. How does your company innovate or adapt to the evolving needs of the vacation rental space? 

AirDNA innovates in the vacation rental space with customizable tools based on the most extensive and accurate dataset. We continuously evolve to meet our clients’ changing needs and new opportunities in this ever-growing and maturing space. Our September 2023 app revamp, driven by customer feedback, made data more accessible and affordable, including dynamic pricing, a re-map for detailed views, regulation data, and free global insights. The mobile-compatible app and simplified subscription model expanded our user base by removing geographical limits.

The acquisition of PMS Uplisting enriched our data offerings and streamlined operations for hosts and property managers, marking a new era of AirDNA holistic all-in-one solutions. This year, we’re continue improving our tools focusing on European markets with a dedicated language strategy to enhance usability for non-English-speaking users. These initiatives ensure our users have the most relevant and effective solution, driving the industry forward.

3. How do you view the various predictions about AI’s impact on society, ranging from dystopian scenarios to transformative advancements, and how does your company approach or integrate AI technology? 

I view AI’s impact on the tourism industry as transformative. I believe OTAs will start to shift from traditional search-based systems to personalized matching systems. Platforms like Airbnb will move from focusing on “where and when” to “who and what,” offering more tailored experiences and potential features like a “generate my travel” button. At AirDNA, our approach to AI includes enhancing data accuracy, identifying market patterns, providing personalized market recommendations, uncovering new trends for hosts with the best comp set, and ensuring dynamic pricing capabilities.

4. What would you like to achieve by attending the Vacation Rental World Summit 2024 in Porto with your company? 

Attending VRWS 2024 in Porto is an opportunity I wouldn’t miss, even traveling all the way from the US. As the short-term rental market becomes more competitive, events like VRWS are key for sharing knowledge and best practices with peers. Antonio always plans the agenda with great care to ensure a great experience for everyone.

I’m honored to give the opening keynote again this year. I’ll share the latest trends and give property managers the tools they need to capitalize on the booming European market and navigate the new regulatory environment. VRWS always does a great job of balancing engaging content with excellent networking opportunities. I look forward to sharing our research and insights to help attendees tackle future challenges.

5. What are your passions, including any hobbies or sports, that you enjoy discussing and sharing with others outside the professional setting?

Spending time outside with my two boys, ages 3 and 6, is one of my favorite things to do. We love our trips to Maine, where we can explore and enjoy nature together. Running and cycling keep me active and energized. Plus, being part of a dart team in Atlanta is a fun way to compete and hang out with friends. These activities bring a nice balance to my work life and give me lots of great experiences to share.
